A Christmas Tale
The Flames
It was for sure a night to remember. It was the nigh of all nights. We laughed as we ran out of the bedroom and into the kitchen in a hurry. My sister reached for the flour as I prepared the snacks reaching up for one of the colorful plates that my mom had hidden away on a high shelf. It was a fine ceramic plate, hand painted with all of the paisley and colors that an artist can embed within his artwork.
You know, it was something about being back in the kitchen where for generations, every single member of our family had cooked in it. It was a feeling of nostalgia to the old days. It made our hearts skip a beat, the thought of standing in a kitchen back home enjoying the smallest of moments when know one knew where we were or what we were doing. Except for her.
It was food that brought us together and food Is what will join us again. For you know it is when you sit around a table and share a meal that you are only truly able to enjoy life and the people around you. It was this festive season that brought us back and the one that will be marked in history.
As I laid the salty snacks on the plates, my sister called me to come and help her. Just like my mom used to do with us when we were young. It was out of nowhere that she grabbed a pinch of flour and threw it on me and said out loud: We don’t have snow but we can make it “. It was the wishful thinking of my sister combined with a hint of mischief that turned the kitchen floor into a white oasis under our feet.
Feeling the heat coming from the oven flames behind us, we realized that it was time to put the pizza in just as the clock dinged 3 times. It was already 8:00 p.m. and we still had to get ready after the mess that we had created in the kitchen.
